Some Information About Lenox Backstamp History

Do you have “by Lenox” of “Lenox” ?

🏺 Your Backstamp Reads:

  • Green wreath surrounding an L

  • The word “Lenox” (not “by Lenox”)

  • The phrase “Made in U.S.A.”

So it’s:

🟢 Green wreath + L
Lenox
Made in U.S.A.

📅 Date Range

Approximately 1953 – early 1980s

Here’s why:

  • The green wreath mark was originally used from 1906 onward.

  • The “Made in U.S.A.” line was added around 1931.

  • But around 1953, Lenox dropped “by Lenox” and changed the text under the wreath to simply “Lenox – Made in U.S.A.”

  • This continued until the early 1980s, when the backstamp was simplified further or printed in gold instead of green.

So your version is post-1953 but still before overseas production — definitely U.S.-made in Trenton, NJ.

🇺🇸 Manufacturing

  • Produced entirely in Trenton, New Jersey

  • True Lenox ivory bone china (not ceramic or imported porcelain)

  • Handmade and kiln-fired — the same quality as earlier green-mark eras, just newer branding

💰 Collectibility

  • Considered vintage mid-century to early-modern Lenox

  • Common on many beloved patterns (e.g. Harvest, Eternal, Citation Gold, Ming, Weatherly)

  • Market value depends on trim and pattern:

    • Everyday pieces: $10 – 25 per plate

    • Serving pieces / teapots / bowls: $40 – 150+

  • Still desirable because Made in U.S.A. confirms the Trenton production era, which collectors prefer.
